About
I'm Terry Hayden.
Registered psychologist, psychotherapeutic counsellor and coach — decades of walking alongside people through change.
The story
Where it began.
My working life began in the corporate world, where I learned how organisations breathe — and how the people inside them carry weight that no job description ever mentions.
But the work that shaped me most happened away from boardrooms: sitting with people at the thresholds of their lives. Weddings. Births. Losses. The moments when the ground shifts and a person becomes someone new, whether they chose it or not.
Alongside the practice I spent many years in the arts and creative industries, and I still draw on that experience — the role of the arts in mental health is something I bring into my work whenever it serves the person in front of me.
The name came from a simple observation. However far away the horizon looks, it moves as you move. The work is not to reach it — it is to keep walking, with company.

How I work
Presence before technique.
I hold no theory above the person in front of me. Some sessions are practical and structured; others are quiet and spacious. What stays constant is attention — listening to what is said, and to what isn't.
My toolkit is broad — counselling, psychology, coaching, CBT — but I reach for tools only after I understand who I'm working with. The work is always shaped around you, never the other way round.
Presence over process
No scripts, no performance — an honest meeting between two people.
The whole person
Body, mind and circumstances are one system. I work with the whole of you.
Questions over answers
I ask questions I can't answer for you, and stay with the discomfort they raise.
Slow and sustainable
Growth that lasts is quiet. I build practices you can keep, not breakthroughs that fade.
What the years taught me
- Everyone is doing their best with the map they have. Better maps, better journey.
- Change is not an event to survive but a skill to practise.
- No two people are the same — help should be tailored, never one size fits all.
- To help somebody accept who they really are is the most special thing this work offers.
Where to find me
Every enquiry begins with a conversation. Choose the route that suits you.
Begin the conversation
The best way to understand how I work is to spend twenty minutes in conversation. No obligation, no pressure — just a chance to talk about what's changing and where you'd like to be standing next.
